The software, based on the eSciDoc infrastructure offers a dedicated metadata management by supporting a non-restrictive metadata schema definition, as simple as liked or as complex as needed.

All objects within the imeji software have a unique identifier and therefore can be referenced in publications or reused in other contexts (dissemination). Large collections can be organized in different albums to focus special items of interest.

== Why imeji? ==
The specialty of imeji is that is does not only store and share items, but that it also stores and shares the metadata values of the items. Metadata is not just restricted to free defined tags, but are maintained in a standardized manner that allows an advanced search based on metadata profiles. Therefore, items are easily retrievable. Further on, it offers persistent albums which can be cited in publications.

== How to use imeji? ==
We set up a demo environment at: http://imeji.org <br/>
The browse and search functionalities within public collections are accessible for everyone.
For uploading items and creating own collections, an account is needed. Please apply for an account at our demo instance by sending an e-mail to the [mailto:imeji-support@gwdg.de '''support'''] mailing list.

== License ==
The imeji software is developed by the open source imeji community. The code is distributed under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL).

== The Birth of imeji ==
imeji is the successor of the software evolved from the [[Faces | FACES project]].
