Discussion on New citation style[edit]

The Citation Style of the American Journal of Physics (AJP)[edit]

AJP provides genre specific citation for: Journal Article, Book, Thesis, Proceedings, Book Chapter and Report. For all other PubMan genres, please use the generic citation, which is specified below.

Overall Rules[edit]

  • Creators are always presented in the following order: Firstname Lastname. E.g. Nicole Kondic
  • If there are two creators, connect them with an "and" e.g. Nicole Kondic and Kristina Büchner
  • If there are several creators, separate them with comma and the last one and the one before the last one with "and" e.g. Nicole Kondic, Kristina Büchener, and Ulla Tschida
--Makarenko 15:49, 6 October 2008 (UTC):
  1. "Creators" here mean "Authors"?
Yes. --Nicole 13:10, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
  1. How to handle items which have Organizations instead of Authors?
just write the organization instead of creator first name and last name. --Nicole 13:10, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
  1. Is there any limits for Creators' amount?
No limit. --Nicole 13:10, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Article Citation[edit]

Creator.Person.GivenName Creator.Person.FamilyName, "Title," Journalname Volume (Issue), startpage-endpage (year issued).

e.g.: Tilmann Hickel, Matthe Uijttewaal, Blazej Grabowski, and Jörg Neugebauer, "Determination of symmetry reduced structures using a soft phonon analysis for magnetic shape memory alloys," Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter 20 (6), 28-35 (2008).

--Makarenko 12:27, 20 October 2008 (UTC) Done

Book Citation[edit]

Citation for books where creator type other than editor[edit]

Creator.Person.GivenName Creator.Person.FamilyName, Title. (PublishingInfo.Publisher, PublishingInfo.Place, year issued), PublishingInfo.Edition ed.

e.g.: Rainer Grote and Dieter Kraus, Fälle zu den Grundrechten. (Beck, München, 2008), 3. ed.

Citation for books where creator type is editor[edit]

Creator.Person.GivenName Creator.Person.FamilyName (ed), Title. (PublishingInfo.Publisher, PublishingInfo.Place, year issued), PublishingInfo.Edition ed.

e.g.: D. Naujoks (ed), Plasma-Material Interaction in Controlled Fusion. (Springer, Berlin, 2006).

If more than one Editor exists, write (eds) instead of (ed)

e.g.: R. Behrisch and W. Eckstein (eds), Sputtering by Particle Bombardment: Experiments and Computer Calculations from Threshold to MeV Energies. (Springer Verlag, Berlin, 2007).

--Makarenko 17:16, 21 October 2008 (UTC) How to handle the case when there are mixed creators: editors&creators simultaneously?

Should be treated like as if there where no editors. Pls. use in this case the rules for "Citation for books where creator type other than editor". --Nicole 08:27, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Done. --Makarenko 10:08, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Thesis Citation[edit]

Creator.Person.GivenName Creator.Person.FamilyName, Degree, PublishingInfo.Publisher, year issued.

e.g.: S. Bäumel, PhD-Thesis, Universität Greifswald, 2008.

--Makarenko 08:15, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

  1. Is there no thesis title?
unfortunately not... but this is how the citation looks like in this citation style. --Nicole 08:29, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
  1. How to to proceed "Degree" field: we have no info in MD like "PhD-Thesis". Should we the field static, i.e. print the "PhD-Thesis" always for thesis?
Of cause we do. Take the value from "thesis type" in PubMan. --Nicole 08:29, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

--Makarenko 12:26, 20 October 2008 (UTC) Done.

Book Chapter Citation[edit]

Creator.Person.GivenName Creator.Person.FamilyName, "Title", in Book Title, edited by (Source.Creator.CreatorType=Editor) Source.Creator.Person.GivenName Source.Creator.Person.FamilyName (Source.PublishingInfo.Publisher, Source.PublishingInfo.Place, year issued), Vol. Volume, pp. startpage-endpage

e.g.: H. Knözinger and E. Taglauer, "Spreading and Wetting", in Handbook of Heterogeneous Catalysis, edited by G. Ertl, H. Knözinger, F. Schüth, and J. Weikamp (Wiley-VCH, Weinheim, 2008), Vol.1, pp. 555-571.

--Makarenko 14:28, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

  • How to avoid ambiguity in case of the both definitions PublishingInfo.Publisher, PublishingInfo.Place and Source.PublishingInfo.Publisher, Source.PublishingInfo.Place?
was an error in spec. please always take Source.PublishingInfo.Publisher, Source.PublishingInfo.Place. --Nicole 08:32, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
  • in pp. the "total number of pages" is defined, but in example - start-page-end-page is shown
you are right. I have corrected it. See above. --Nicole 08:32, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

--Makarenko 15:49, 20 October 2008 (UTC) Done

Report Citation[edit]

Creator.Person.GivenName Creator.Person.FamilyName, Report No. <Report Number>, Year issued.

e.g.:. Y. Feng, R. Liu, J. Kisslinger, and F. Sardei, Report No. 8578, 2004.

--Makarenko 14:04, 20 October 2008 (UTC) For the moment the Report number is not defined as possible identifier type. To be defined in the Application profile for Publication. Temporarily solution: The Report number should be populated as and identifier of type Other.

--Makarenko 14:09, 20 October 2008 (UTC) Done

Proceedings[edit]

Creator.Person.GivenName Creator.Person.FamilyName, presented at Event.Title, Event.Place, year issued.

e.g. T. M. Hirsch and H. W. Müller, presented at the IPP Summer University for Plasma Physics, Garching, 2006.

--Makarenko 08:47, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

What type of creators should be presented here? authors, editors or doesn't matter?
In this case only authors are relevant. if there are other creators than author, please treat the citation as if there was no creator at all.

--Makarenko 12:27, 20 October 2008 (UTC) Done

Generic Citation[edit]

Creator.Person.GivenName Creator.Person.FamilyName, "Title", in Source.Title, edited by (Source.Creator.CreatorType=Editor) Source.Creator.Person.GivenName Source.Creator.Person.FamilyName (PublishingInfo.Publisher, PublishingInfo.Place, year issued), Vol. Volume, pp. total number of pages OR startpage-endpage

--Natasa 12:29, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
I have several questions:
a) Are we always concerning generic citations that have editors?
No they don't have to have an editor. --Nicole 13:19, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
b) What if the source is not specified?
Then the citation would for example be: O. Schmitz, M. W. Jakubowski, H. Frerichs, D. Harting, M. Lehnen, B. Unterberg, S. S. Abduallaev, S. Brezinsek, I. Classen, T. Evans, Y. Feng, K. H. Finken, M. Kantor, D. Reiter, U. Samm, B. Schweer, G. Sergienko, G. W. Spakman, M. Tokar, E. Uzgel, R. C. Wolf, and Textor Team, "Identification and analysis of transport domains in the stochastic boundary of TEXTOR-DED for different mode spectra", (2008), Vol. 48, pp. 23-58. --Nicole 13:19, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
c) what if there is no source creator type of "editor"?

See answer on b). --Nicole 13:19, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

--Makarenko 16:41, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
  1. Typo?
    (Source.Creator.CreatorType=Editor) Creator.Person.GivenName Creator.Person.FamilyName"
    probably:
     (Source.Creator.CreatorType=Editor) Source.Creator.Person.GivenName Source.Creator.Person.FamilyName
    ?
Yes, typo. Already corrected. --Nicole 13:19, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
  1. Which rules should be defined for multiply Editors? Same as for Overall Rules?
Yes, please. --Nicole 13:19, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

e.g.: H. Knözinger and E. Taglauer, "It's raining today", in Heterogeneous Catalysis, edited by G. Ertl, H. Knözinger, F. Schüth, and J. Weikamp (Wiley-VCH, Weinheim, 2008), Vol.1, pp. 555.

Common questions[edit]

  1. --Makarenko 16:31, 20 October 2008 (UTC) I see no differences between type Generic and Book Chapter
