imeji - Publish Your Scientific Multimedia Data[edit]

imeji creates citable research assets by describing, enriching, sharing, exposing, linking and archiving data.

The software, based on the eSciDoc infrastructure offers a dedicated metadata management by supporting a non-restrictive metadata schema definition, as simple as liked or as complex as needed.

All objects within the imeji software have a unique identifier and therefore can be referenced in publications or reused in other contexts (dissemination). Large collections can be organized in different albums to focus special items of interest.

Items
imeji allows an easy and efficient upload of items through the web browser.

Collections
All pictures within imeji are grouped in collections. Each collection can possess its own metadata profile.

Collections are kept private per default but they also can be published on the web to make them visible and reusable by other researchers around the world.

A collection has exactly one metadata profile.

Albums
For the re-use of items in publications or for the illustration of certain research questions, albums can be created in imeji. Albums are similar to photo albums in the non-digitalized world and are subsets of the content of imeji.
An album can contain pictures from several collections. Therefore items within one album can have different metadata profiles.

Collaboration
imeji provides locking mechanism down to picture level to enable secure collaborative work. When someone tries to edit a locked item, an information message will be displayed. To avoid confusion when more than one user tries to edit the metadata of the same picture(s) at the same time, the system takes care that always the newest version of the pictures and its metadata is displayed. And this will be the only version that is editable.

imeji in use[edit]

Why imeji?[edit]

The specialty of imeji is that is does not only store and share items, but that it also stores and shares the metadata values of the items. Metadata is not just restricted to free defined tags, but are maintained in a standardized manner that allows an advanced search based on metadata profiles. Therefore, items are easily retrievable. Further on, it offers persistent albums which can be cited in publications.

How to use imeji?[edit]

We set up a demo environment at: http://imeji.org
The browse and search functionalities within public collections are accessible for everyone. For uploading items and creating own collections, an account is needed. Please apply for an account at our demo instance by sending an e-mail to the support mailing list.

License[edit]

The imeji software is developed by the open source imeji community. The code is distributed under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL).

The Birth of imeji[edit]
