2009-06-02/05: 98. Deutscher Bibliothekartag in Erfurt, Germany[edit]

2009-06-25/26: eScience Seminar on Repository Systems in Garching, Germany[edit]

The second seminar is devoted to one of the big challenges for research institutes: how to guarantee persistence and continuous access to its records to all researchers. In addition to enabling data-driven research work and the duty to store the context of publications to allow replications, we have in many cases the ethical duty to preserve our valuable data for future generations.
The core of state-of-the-art data management is a well-designed repository system, e.g. a software layer, that allows users to add resources into an organized and secure container, to find these resources, to refer to them in a unique way, to allow checking authenticity and to access and visualize them. This topic is not new as one can imagine, it was Friedrich Hertweck from RZG who created AMOS (Advanced multi user operating System) in the 70-ies. AMOS was an excellent piece of software which allowed scientists in plasmaphysics amongst others to store and retrieve their large data volumes.
We want to address questions such as: what has changed, what are the challenges today, which models are being thought of and why, which software is being used etc. A recent self-assessment amongst service centres in the large European CLARIN project revealed that about 80% of the institutes are restructuring their repositories to support the requirements mentioned above. Yet we don’t know what the situation is in the institutes of the MPG, but we are sure that this eScience seminar will increase awareness and lead to improvements in data management.

2009-10-30: The Right to Information Access in Pennsylvania, USA[edit]

The United States Constitution codifies the right to free expression. But what rights have we to access the results of free expression?
“Libraries,” states the American Library Association, “help ensure that Americans can access the information they need – regardless of age, education, ethnicity, language, income, physical limitations or geographic barriers – as the digital world continues to evolve.” But two decades of rapid developments in information technologies have revealed a contradiction: it is easier than ever to disseminate information and to receive it, but it is also easier to control and monitor access to that information.
The first Jeremiah Kaplan Institute on Libraries, the Information Society, and Social Policy will address the "right" to knowledge and access to information, as well as the changing role that libraries and publishers play in supporting access in a networked environment. How must the missions of libraries and publishing adapt after the Internet? Who should have access to information and knowledge and how can it best be enabled? What economic, political, and regulatory factors impede that access, and how might they be overcome?
Four experts, representing the fields of education, libraries, information technology, and law and public policy, will explore these issues in a day-long symposium held at Penn State University's University Park campus on October 30, 2009.

2009-11-03: Urheberrechtstagung 2009 in Göttingen[edit]

2009-11-05/06: Open 2009 in Helsinki, Finnland[edit]

The doctoral programme in Media Lab Helsinki will organize a symposium about openness in November 5–6, 2009, which is the second edition of the event.
OPEN 2009 – Media Lab Doctor of Arts Symposium is an event for all interested parties who want to understand the ongoing shift from an industrially organized era to an era of networks and social production. The role and meaning of information is changing from a fixed, well-guarded asset to a continuously changing openly shared process. Openness is affecting the relational dynamics between different actors. New ideals, organizational forms and practices emerge. They interfere with older traditions and create a space of conflict.
This symposium aims to explore acting in this space, keeping theoretical and practical knowledge together.

2009-11-20: Common Principles of European Intellectual Property Law in Bayreuth[edit]

Intellectual property law has been harmonised by Community law to a considerable extent. At the same time the intellectual property rights have converged. The TRIPS Agreement and the EU Enforcement Directive provide for rules and principles which apply to all intellectual property rights. The academic discussion has not kept pace with this development. European intellectual property law is often seen through the spectacles of national law; pan-European discussions about issues of Community law seem to be the exception rather than the rule. At the same time copyright, trade mark and patent lawyers do easily not find a common language. Thus, intellectual property research lags behind general private law, where the efforts of various study groups have recently resulted in the Draft Common Frame of Reference.
The participants of this conference will investigate if and to what extent European rules and principles applicable to all intellectual property rights already exist or whether they can be found on the basis of the acquis communautaire and comparative law. Prominent experts of intellectual property law from several European countries will discuss the merits and the methodology of this approach before turning to several areas of substantive intellectual property law such as grounds of protection, secondary liability and exceptions, to enforcement and finally to the relationship between intellectual property and neighbouring areas of Community law.
