PubMan Look-Up Services
These specifications describe the integration of various look-up and web 2.0 services into PubMan.
Author-centered Look-Up Options[edit]
The integration of WorldCat and Google Scholar look-up into the researcher portfolio provides the possibility for the user to search for additional works of the same author (e.g. beyond a particular organization or period of time).
WorldCat[edit]
Status: in specification
Schedule: R 5
Flow of Events
- on PubMan researcher portfolio the user has the possibility to start a look-up for further articles of the same author in WorldCat
- by starting that query the user is directed to WorldCat website
MFranke 09:20, 25 March 2009 (UTC) -- This seems not to be possible. As there is no WorldCat author id it is only possible to look for authors with the same name. A search for Michael Franke or Juliane Müller retrieves various different authors. But this is what we want, right?
Juliane 10:47, 25 March 2009 (UTC)-- Right, that's what we want. On WorldCat website the user gets a range of possible authors. He/She has to choose the appropriate one.
Options
Basic Option
- the WorldCat icon with a heading "Search this author in WorldCat" is integrated into the researcher portfolio page
- by using the WorldCat button a query for articles of the same author should start
Alternative Option
- WorldCat offers the possibility to add a search box into other websites:
- the HTML code for the search box is available on WorldCat after a prior registration; it includes ones WorldCat Affiliate ID
- it's possible to adjust the embedded styles to have the box's appearance conform to one's site
- here are the three available versions of the search plug-in with their HTML codes:
Version | Code | Example |
Narrow Search Box (150 pixels wide) | html code for Narrow Search Box
Wide Search Box (250 pixels wide) | html code for Wide Search Box
Tab Search Box (500 pixels wide) | html code for Tab Search Box |
- for our use the text of the search box should be adjusted into: "Search this author in WorldCat"
- via the offered search boxes an automatic WorldCat query within the fields title, subject and author starts -> for our use a search within the author field would be sufficient
- if possible the name of the author should be transferred automatically to the WorldCat search box on the researcher portfolio page in PubMan -> only one click is required to start up the search for further works of the same author
Outcome after consultation with DEV and GUI Team:
- we decided not to use logo for the integration of both look-up services (worldcat and google scholar), but using just a link -> Google Scholar
- disadvantage: no recognition value
Supported Queries on Worldcat
- example search within all fields for works of "Kurt Mehlhorn", example using various name variants
- WorldCat search possibilities within the author field:
- via truncation (e.g. "mehl*")
- only the surname (e.g. "mehlhorn")
- surname plus abbreviated given name (e.g. "mehlhorn, k." or "k. mehlhorn")
- surname plus complete given name (e.g. "kurt mehlhorn" or "mehlhorn, kurt")
- via boolean logic (e.g. "mehlhorn" OR "kurt mehlhorn" OR "k.mehlhorn")
- PubMan-style is: "surname, given name"
- WorldCat search possibilities within the author field:
Google Scholar[edit]
Status: in specification
Schedule: R 5
Flow of Events
- on PubMan researcher portfolio the user has the possibility to start a look-up for further articles of the same author in Google Scholar
- by starting that query the user is directed to Google Scholar website
MFranke 09:28, 25 March 2009 (UTC) -- Same comment as above. No id, no proper identification.
Juliane 10:52, 25 March 2009 (UTC)-- Same answer as above ;) The user gets a range of Google Scholar results. He/She has the possibility to find further interesting articles of the same author.
Options
Basic Option
- the Google Scholar icon with a heading "Search this author in Google Scholar" is integrated into the researcher portfolio page
- by using the Google Scholar button a query for articles of the same author should start
Alternative Option
- Google Scholar offers the possibility to add a search box into other websites
- above the search box there should be the heading "Search this author in Google Scholar"
- via the offered search box an automatic Google Scholar query starts
- if possible the name of the author should be transferred automatically to the Google Scholar search box on the researcher portfolio page in PubMan
Outcome after consultation with DEV and GUI Team:
- we decided not to use logo for the integration of google scholar, but using just a link
- and to be consistent, we will do the same for integration of worldcat
- disadvantage: no recognition value
Supported Queries for a Person on Google Scholar
- only the surname (e.g. "mehlhorn")
- surname plus abbreviated given name (e.g. "mehlhorn, k." or "k. mehlhorn")
- surname plus complete given name (e.g. "kurt mehlhorn" or "mehlhorn, kurt")
Future Improvements/Developments[edit]
- "dynamic" offer of Look-Up in respective source, depending on available types of personIDs stored in Cone (e.g. from KAKEN, ResearcherID etc.)
- integration of vLib and SFX
- note by Robert: "if cone (including the researcher portfolio) is intended to be available as software package that others may install, the additional search services integrated in the portfolio would have to be configurable, i guess. so some sort of widget/gadget mechanism/interface would be required"
Article-centered Look-Up Options[edit]
ISI Web of Knowledge[edit]
By looking-up an article in ISI Web of Science the user has the possibility to get more information based on the information stored in ISI's citation indexes, such as "times cited" (number and list of citing articles), "references" (number and list of cited references), journal's impact factor, journal's table of contents. Furthermore ISI provides the possibility to export the record to RefMan or/and ProCite, to create a citation alert, to view related records or/and to create a citation map:
Status: in specification
Schedule: R 5
Flow of Events
- on pubman item list the user chooses one item for detailed view. This items fulfills one of following conditions:
- the article has originally been loaded from ISI's Web of Science and the metadata record includes an ISI identifier (UT)
- the article could be looked up via ISI's Article Match Retrieval Service
- the ISI identifier serves as link (maybe with a tooltip "Show this item in ISI") to direct the user to the corresponding record in Web of Science
- as access to the Web of Science requires a subscription, we will not offer "dominant" look-up -> in brackets we provide info such as "commercial" or "subscription needed"
Constraints
- lookup in Article Match Retrieval Service required (details known by Inga) or service can only be offered for items with ISI ID
- OPEN: The usage of Web of Science is restricted to users with subscription
- Option (a): information on look-up icon: "This service requires a subscription" (the chosen one)
- Option (b): provide icon only if accessing IP address belongs to MPS addresses (might not be feasible)
Future Improvements/Developments[edit]
- allow searches in various databases even without having the respective ISI ID
- integrating a look-up in an OpenURL resolver registry (see discussion page)
Social Bookmarking[edit]
With a "Bookmark" link, we can provide PubMan users an easy way to save the PubMan item view directly to their personal bookmarking page.
Delicious, Citeulike and Connotea[edit]
Status: in specification
Schedule: R 5
Flow of Events
- on PubMan item list the user chooses one item for detailed view
- on PubMan item view page the user finds the possibility to bookmark the choosen article
- after consultation with GUI team: bookmarking icons should be positioned in the near of "cite this item as" on the PubMan item view page
- the user chooses the preferred bookmark service
- available services are:
- Delicious
- Citeulike
- Connotea
- the user is directed to the respective bookmark page
Proposals for GUI
- one "Bookmark" icon -> via mouseover the bookmark options will be displayed (preferred, as more to come)
- single icons for each bookmarking tool
