The MPI for Psycholinguistics initiated a series of eScience seminars within the Max Planck Society. These seminars focus on necessary preconditions to enable science to benefit from distributed network environments like the Internet or the Grid in an effective manner. The eScience Seminar is coordinated by Marc Kemps-Snijders (chair), Bernhard Neumair, Ulrich Schwardmann, Thomas Soddemann, Stefan Heinzel, Laurent Romary, Malte Dreyer, Robert Casties, Hermann Schier, Rainer Gerling, Uwe Brahm, Gerhard Weikum, Peter Wittenburg.

For any comments, please contact Marc Kemps-Snijders (marc.kemps-snijders@mpi.nl).

Topics of interest[edit]

First thoughts on a seminar program in the MPG (Peter Wittenburg, december 2005):

Research life cycle[edit]

  • Changes in research methodology
  • Changes in research questions and discourse
  • "Communication" and "interdisciplinarity" - impact in the three sections of the MPG

Functional aspects[edit]

  • Integration and Interoperability
  • Virtual Organizations
  • Virtual collaborations
  • "Break down the barriers"

Enabling technologies[edit]

  • Grid Technologies
    • Certification and PKI infrastructure
    • Authentification and authorization
    • Web services
    • Grid software
    • Repositories
    • Federation technologies
    • Relevant standards
  • Semantic Web Technologies
    • Metadata/registries
    • Schemas
    • Concept registries
    • Ontologies
    • Media technologies
    • Linguistic and text technologies
    • Relevant standards

Legal and ethical aspects[edit]

  • Basis of federations
  • Open Access Movement
  • IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) and legal framewokr
  • Licensing
  • Ethical questions

Political / strategic issues[edit]

  • International activities (e.g. UK, USA, France, NL)
  • Activities supported / funded by EU
  • Positioning of MPG?
  • Political activities of MPG?

Target groups (their functions)[edit]

  • Main focus on MPG scientists and staff
  • Representatives of other research organizations are welcomed

Directors, management representatives:

  • Awareness building, transfer of strategical knowledge, input in discussions on formation and infrastructure

Scientists:

  • Awareness building, transfer of concrete knowledge

Developers:

  • Transfer of concrete knowledge

Planned activities[edit]

  • Topic-clusters will be offered for specific target groups => seminars from 2-5 days (2-day course for directors)
  • Within the topic cluster, re-combinable modules will be developed
  • Focus of knowledge transfer on “grid technologies” and “semantic web technologies” (5 day seminar each)
  • Seminars will be organised by RZG (Rechenzentrum Garching) and technical group of MPI Psycholinguistics. Support will be provided by the MPG.
  • Experts will be invited to each of the seminars, with special attention on external experts for the seminars organised for directors
  • Seminars will start in summer 2006

eScience Seminar Topics 2007[edit]

  • service and information registries (22/23. Märx Göttingen)
  • secure server and service systems (20/21. Juni München)
  • open archivable formats (25/26/ Oktober Berlin)

The flyer describing the eScience seminars in 2007 can be downloaded here (eScience_Flyer_2006-11-07.pdf). After the two first seminars the BAR decided that the series should be continued. A draft version of a document describing concrete results and planned activities can be found under [Results]. A special expert group dealing with setting up distributed authentication and authorization infrastructure (AAI) has been setup. For details see [Working Groups].

eScience Seminar Topics 2008 (open for discussion)[edit]

We would like to ask everyone interested to make comments about the possible topics for 2008. The current list of possible topics is based on discussions and is shown here

  1. Unique and persistent Identifiers and Resolving (Peter, Daan, Robert)
  2. Advanced Knowledge Management (Weikum, Renn, Peter, Laurent, ?)
  3. Aspekte der Langzeit Archivierung (Wolfgang, Ulrich, ?)
  4. Analyse von Repository Systemen (Daan, Malte, ?)
  5. Allgemeines Seminar zum Thema eScience (Traugot, ?)
  6. Machine Learning Methoden (Malte, ?)

If you have other topics which you would suggest or if you would like to suggest priorities etc, please, add your comments to this forum. A more exhaustive list of possible topics can be found in the Themennet.

AAI expert group[edit]

the next meeting will be at Do. 26. July 2007 in MPI Solid State Science, Stuttgart, 10:00 - 17.00.

Subject will be federation policies and attribute sets. We will have a close look on policies from

Attribute Sets[edit]

  • schac, schema for academia, TERENA schac
  • HISperson LDAP Schema, Hochschul-Informations-System GmbH, there was no no actual schema found, only a presentation of Peter Gietz, DAASI [2]
  • comparison of higher education attributes sets, mace, Nov. 2005 comparison of attribute sets
  • introduction to Shibboleth attributes, Peter Gietz, DAASI, DFN workshop Feb. 2007 [3]
