The DFG-Viewer is a web service which presents digitized works stored in distributed repositories under a common, but simple user interface.
Status and Impact[edit]
According to the ZVDD presentation on the 97. Deutsche Bibliothekstag by Sebastian Meyer in June 2008, the DFG viewer may become the primary presentation tool for projects funded by DFG: "[...] wird die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft einem Entwurf ihrer ab Oktober gültigen Praxisregeln zufolge künftige Digitalisierungsprojekte verpflichten, den DFG-Viewer als „primäres Anzeigeinstrument“ zu verwenden".
Further information is available in the article Einheitlicher Webauftritt für DFG-geförderte Digitalisierungsvorhaben by Sebastian Meyer.
Requirements of DFG Viewer[edit]
To use the DFG Viewer for the display of digitalized work, three components have to be accessible through a simple web access:
- The metadata of the digitalized work has to be available in the METS/MODS format
- The width of the digitalized work has to be between 1000 and 1500 pixel
- One file (108 pixel wide and 50 pixel high) with the name and the logo of the project (or institute) has to be provided
METS Profile[edit]
The DFG viewer website provides a set of documentations for the DFG METS Profile:
- DFG METS Profile (minimum requirements for the DFG Viewer)
- ZVDD METS Profile (detail requirements for the DFG Viewer), XML-Version
In addition, the SLUB Dresden contributed a METS/MODS Validator
Examples METS Files (xml)[edit]
- Minimal requirements
- Light requirements (some more elements than the minimal requirements)
- SUB
- Uni Halle
METS Mapping[edit]
Structural Data[edit]
The DFG Viewer provides a standardized list of structural elements which can be used for identification of the different parts within the digitized books (e.g. chapter, cover). This list also contains a mapping to the vocabulary used by the ZVDD, which is similar to the one from the DFG Viewer, but not so detailed.
