The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines are an international standard for the representation and encoding of texts in digital form. The Guidelines are maintained and developed by the TEI-Consortium. TEI is an XML-based format, which is mainly used within the humanities (encoding of texts, linguistic annotation, etc.)
